Upon leaving secondary school I undertook an apprenticeship in my Father’s engineering business in the Scottish Borders while completing my further education at Jewel & Esk College, Edinburgh.
As a qualified engineer and welder, I identified an opportunity to move away from mechanical and functional engineering by accepting an offer of employment in Sydney, Australia at F & D Normoyle Engineering.
There I worked on various design led and innovative projects including; the UTS Dr. Chau Chak Wing Building designed by Frank Gehry, the Barangaroo development and Sydney Cricket Ground Redevelopment.
The specialist skills which I developed and the exposure to art and design, ignited a desire to experiment and explore what I was capable of.
I started my career as an artist by creating small stainless steel sculptures. One of my first designs was the ‘Crofters Cottage’. Finding some commercial success with this design, including being invited to the Liberty Open call in 2016, was gratifying as a new artist. However, against sound advice to develop a process to mass produce these sculptures, I turned my attention to developing and evolving my own style.
My ethos remains the same today, every sculpture is fabricated by hand in the studio.
The aesthetic of my work is abstract geometry, which I occasionally juxtapose with organic elements. I love to incorporate contrast into my work. Using different form, colour, material, material finish and positioning to evoke a certain emotion and sense of transcendence between the work and observer. The way light reflects off the abstract surface gives each work life and mimics a sense of motion.
I am invested in growing this technique in my practice. Since the origin of my first sculpture I've constantly sought evolution and refinement. Finding ways and processes which can stay true to my ethos.
Since my first self funded solo exhibition in Custom Lane, Edinburgh in 2017 my studio has grown to include domestic and international commissions and collaborations.
